Spadra, California

On August 27, 1943, the 34th General Hospital received orders to proceed to Spadra, California, to take over operation of the 13th General Hospital. The organization entrained on September 4 and moved from Pomona to Spadra by motor convoy to assume operation of a hospital serving the Desert Training Center.

Upon arrival, the unit bivouacked in 92 pyramidal tents pending the departure of the 13th General Hospital. The plant was carrying a patient census of 1,640 as of September 11, 1943, and the assumption of operations served as the test period for the incoming hospital personnel.

The source describes the installation as operating on a simulated combat-mission basis, furnishing rear-echelon treatment and care to approximately 100,000 troops during maneuver periods. For a time it was the only general hospital in medical support of the Desert Maneuver Area force.

The remainder entrained out of Spadra on April 26, arrived in Atlantic City on May 1, and entered final preparation for overseas movement.
